The Pleasures Of Camping In PA

The next time you go >camping in PA (Pennsylvania) there are some things you should consider. When you think of camping and the outdoors most think of Yosemite Yellowstone and large famous parks. Pennsylvania, though not on the top of the list has other attractions that you should be aware of.

Most state parks are open seasonal. Pennsylvania has three state parks that are open year round. These parks include Little Pine, Promised Land, and Ole Bull. Since this location is in the upper northeast, these parks get a taste of all the different seasons.

At one particular park Promised Land has a 422 acre lake, which fishing is a common pastime. During the winter season ice fishing is also a big hit among visitors. That is not the only attraction during the long winter months. There are hundreds of trails open for cross county skiing. Twenty three miles of trail is also open for snowmobiles. Along with the trailers and RV you can take to the campsite log cabins are available.

The majority of the state parks are seasonal. Champan, Gifford Pinchot, Pine Grove Furnace, Shawnee, Parker Dam, and Pymatuning are the top seven state parks in Pennsylvania. Each park has different scales of attractions. Pymatuning may be the most know because of its size. It is one of the largest parks in the state reaching 21, 122 acres. It’s reservoir covers over seventeen thousand acres. This is one of the many reasons why it is also the most visited park in the state.

There are some rules and regulations, just like at any state park for camping. Pennsylvania parks have textbook rules. Such has no unauthorized fires, this is a for obvious reasons. No alcoholic beverages are allowed at the campsites or the state parks. This may be a bad thing for a few campers, though there are plenty of campsites outside of the state parks where having alcohol is legal. On the up side, the state parks allows pets on premise as long as it is a dog, cat or small caged animal.

Pennsylvania has populations of black bears and coyotes. This is state land that the elk are free to roam and graze about. An elk is much bigger then a deer. A typical male elk can reach a thousand pounds.

Hunting and game options offered on state parks if you have proper paperwork and its the right season. Game animals include grouse, whitetail deer, pheasant and wild turkey. Black bears and coyotes are native to the land. Be sure not to leave out any food around the campsites.

Getting There is Half the Fun

Lacking a journey there would never be a point of interest…without a destination there would not be any reason to ever go on a journey. Your trip changes throughout your adventure but there is always another journey to take you to your next one. Enjoy every mile of each adventure across America and it will surely enhance all of your road trips.

Road Trips Can Bring Families Together
Turn off the phones, MP3 players, radios, and try spending the time talking with one another. Play games without computers, use the great outdoors to help you decide which traveling games to play, there are so many available. During some of our drives with our grandson, we played the “Alphabet Game”. He knew his alphabet so he could play along with us, the object was to go through the alphabet letter by letter and find a word for each letter on signage somewhere along the road. With this game, there is no winner, everyone wins, it’s fun and much time and many miles pass before you get the dreaded, “Are We There Yet?”

Taking the Roads Less Traveled
Adding more excitement to your trip when you are able to see this great country of ours in a totally new way. Many roads other than the Interstates offer an appealing advantage and more scenery. You won’t be white knuckled and pressured as the row of semi’s pass by going a hundred miles an hour, rocking your rig back and forth while you try to maintain a decent speed. What’s the rush anyway? It’s not always the end point that makes the road trip memorable, it can also be the short stops in between, where you locate the perfect little American town to stop by while taking a break. Local attractions can be found on the internet during your trip planning using many rv park and campground directory websites.

Photos of the Destination are Not Always What You Anticipated
Viewing rv park photos of your American destination prior to departure can help you decide what to expect but there are times when those picutres could not even begin to show the beauty of the place you are visiting. At other times those pictures you view could make the point of interest look much more presentable than it actually is when you see it for yourself. In the latter scenario, it will be much more bearable if you had a fun trip to talk about when sharing this trip with your friends and family.

While On the Subject of Digital Photo Taking
Since wasting film is no longer an issue and taking hundreds of photos cost very little, this is a great time to discover this as an adventurous part of the country. Give everyone the opportunity to take photos along the way, these pictures will not always do the scenery any justice but the laughter and memories that some of them will bring into your lives will be cherished for many years. There was a time when we gave our grandson the camera while we were driving the RV and they took hundreds of pictures of the landscape, mostly the inside of the vehicle including many self-portraits and surprise photos of us that we all laughed hysterically at when we later reviewed them.

We also have a few photo rituals that we continue to attempt during our trips, use your imagination and you will be able to find some of your own. One of ours is to take a photo of every state line we cross, we can’t stop to take the picture, we must do it while driving. This sounds much easier than it has been to accomplish…there are no blueprints for state line signs…they can be right at the line…right before…directly after…down the road a bit…they can be on the right side of the road…inside the median…even on a overpass. The fun is to find it, take the shot while in a moving vehicle with only a moments notice. It has been challenging but we know if we miss one or the photo is not the best than that lets us know that we will have to cross that boarder again in our upcoming  RV and camping travels.

What Everyone Should Know About Expedition Camping

Unlike camping out in your back garden or in the local area for the weekend expedition camping equipment needs to be slightly more robust and able to stand up to the rugged terrain. Of course the exact items you need will be dependant on the expeditions that you go on. As example Nordic skiing will require you to bring much different camping equipment than say a canoeing expedition in the south of France.

Although it will become apparent that there are certain pieces of kit that suit every kind of trip. Most of the time you will find it best to start off selecting the rucksack you will be making use of as you will then know the exact size you need to fit all your gear into. It is always best to be able to fit all of your gear into a single bag and a rucksack that is not too large will also help you keep the weight down. The reason for getting the bag at the start is that you will then be able to but all other equipment that will fit your bag rather than vice versa.

Next consider where you will be sleeping. Tents are clearly a popular option but you can also make use of a decent quality hammock for camping. Of course the type of tent you get will depend on the weather conditions with a four seasons tent necessary for winter conditions. One issue people have mentioned with hammocks is that because you are in the air your back can get cold as you are sleeping. So for this reason a sleeping mat with insulation will be best and is also useful for tents as well.

Then there is the matter of a sleeping bag. Again the climate will play a large role here. On the whole mummy shaped sleeping bags are best as they fit nicely to your body and pack smaller. Unzipping the sleeping bags makes it easy to vary the temperature in most kinds of conditions, which is ideal.
